Nurse Nan's Credentials

Late last year, a group of politically minded individuals started the Shoalanda Speaks group. Initially it was just a blog dedicated to conservative local politics, but later it branched out into other areas. Originally, I was asked to help edit the Shoalanda blog; later I was asked to do a fun type first aid blog--one that would answer questions from Shoals area residents. Currently, there are four blogs in the Shoalanda group, and each uses the same e-mail address: shoalanda.speaks@gmail.com.

In the past few days, I have received several questions from Tollie Williams concerning my credentials. We prefer to keep things light and breezy at our blog, but since Mr. Williams' questions seem to point in the other direction, and since these questions have been asked on a public forum (Twitter), I will address them here.

Nurse Nan's Credentials, Affiliations, & Academics:

1. Academic diploma from Coffee High School
2. BA in English from UNA
3. BA in History from UAH
4. ASN from Calhoun Community College
5. BSN from UAH
6. Certification in Growth Hormone Education
7. Certification in Emotional Effects of Violence on Children
8. Author of two local histories
9. Editor of one local history
10. Editor of two novels
11. Member Phi Alpha Theta
12. Member Sigma Tau Delta
13. Member Phi Theta Kappa
14. Founder - Information Campaign for AED Readiness & Education (ICARE)

We hope the above will satisfy Mr. Williams' curiosity.

Thanks for your patience today,

Nurse Nan

I appreciate your response. I wasn't particularly looking for that great of detail, but I do appreciate your clarification that you do possess a BSN. While I do take note that you don't seem to be a practicing nurse (or am I mistaken?), now that you have stated your accreditation, I am (slightly?) less skeptical and more inclined to read your blog with interest.

Again, thank you for sharing.

PS. I just double checked. Unless I'm mistaken, you are still remaining anonymous. I respect that, but at the same time, I stand by my original tweet:

"[Nurse Nan's] has no contact info. Why the anonymity? If Nurse Nan is a RN, why no credentials shown?"

Thanks

Hi, Tollie, I'm not sure why you think I'm not a practicing Registered Nurse. I passed the NCLEX on the first try after 85 questions (minimum is 75, maximum is 275), and I work approximately 45 hours a week. I have simply never felt the need to place an ego-driven bio on this blog.

As for names, if you have read "Shoalanda Speaks," you know that only one person affillilated with that blog uses his real name. Mr. Truitt owns his own business and is in no danger of losing his job (or he hopes contracts) simply because he is a Republican or supports one candidate over the other. Most of us do not have that luxury; I'm pretty sure the nursing company for which I work does not want its name bandied about in the blogosphere.

The purpose of this blog is to help people, not to create controversy. We don't diagnose illnesses or in any way exceed the scope of our practice. I hope that answers all your questions.

Thanks for reading...

I again thank you for your reply, and apologize for my misunderstanding.

I think you have misinterpreted my motivation for asking. I certainly wasn't asking for a full resumé - I merely wanted to know what true credentials you had to offer advice under the title of "Nurse." I confess that with "Natural Home Remedies" in the title, I was highly suspicious. However, you have shared a great deal of detail and I am inclined to believe you. I regret that you do not wish to state your name; however, I do respect that.

If I may: you might want to consider re-designing your blog to address the questions I've posed. The lack of information regarding you, the author, coupled with your borrowed image from a children's book (here on Amazon) and your solicitation to click on Google Ads (which violates the Google Adsense policy) - all combined to make for a blog I was highly skeptical of.

Finally, while you speak of some sort of political network - I've found no link connecting your blog with any others. The only commonality I was able to find is @Shoalanda on Twitter, who frequently links to this blog and another, while using the #shoals tag.

Thanks.

PS. The tone of your original post really mischaracterizes me. I wish you would have considered that I attempted to directly contact you in the most appropriate manner I knew - via a message to @Shoalanda on Twitter.

The initial messages went unreplied to. So, then I used the #Shoals tag to heighten the visibility of my tweet for your attention and to allows others to see if @Shoalanda (who often uses the #Shoals tag to plug various blogs) would respond.

Then, rather that creating a brief "about the author" section in your sidebar, you make an entire blog post that addresses me in the 3rd person and paints me as your adversary.

Again, please keep in mind that none of my questions would have needed to be asked if you had just simply provided any information about the author of this blog in the first place.

You can say "I'm remaining anonymous because..." if you wish, but it should at least say something like "I'm a practicing nurse, with x years of experience in x setting. I'm writing this blog because... I'm a part of a blog network. You can find our other blogs ... You can reach me by email at ..." - you get the idea.

I do wish that you would update your original post to not paint me in such an adversarial light, if you can see that I was only asking a few basic questions that you should have already answered on a blog that actively promotes itself on twitter.

Thanks.
- Tollie

I will first address the issue of "Nurse Nancy" copyright. It is our understanding that, while currently copyright may last 70 years after the death of the artist, at the time this artwork was introduced the law stated a maximum copyright date of 50 years and was not grandfathered into the current law.

Second, while Shoalanda links our blog, we do not link the other blogs (political, crime, etc.) since the intent of this endeavor is to provide information to everyone--we wouldn't want to be spurned by anyone due to the political opinions of the publisher.

As for mentioning Google ads, I'm sure it was not anyone's (and certainly not mine) intention to suggest anyone click on anything about which they had no interest. As you know, Google ads were geared toward blog content until April, when they became geared toward browsing history. If you wish to contact Mr. Truitt, you may do so at: eatruitt@gmail.com.

Thanks

Tollie... Really. If people want your advice they will ask for it. I am sure no one cares about how credible you think their blog is. You are not the supreme authority over anything. If you don't like the blog don't read it. Other than that you should keep your mouth shut.
